Master of Design

Kimono unfolded and reimagined explores the relationship between Japanese aesthetics and Western fashion design from the 1800s to the present time through literature and design research. This Master of Design research project interrogates the origins of the kimono and its success, and adoption, as a garment by the West. Silk, linen and wool were selected to create a contemporary fashion collection that was influenced by the silhouette and details of the kimono, and which integrated, subtlety, elements of Japanese and Western design.
