The School of Art
Whiti o Rehua

Whiti o Rehua School of Art offers exciting pathways into contemporary New Zealand art across a wide range of media and processes, matauranga Māori, visual and material culture.

The School’s faculty is comprised of leading practitioners, researchers, artists, curators, art writers and critics.

They are supported by expert technicians and facilities that allow our students to expand their art practice and explore new media, including sculpture, painting, drawing, performance, installation, moving image, photography, printmaking, site-responsive work, curatorial activities and art writing.

In 2015 Toioho Ki Āpiti Māori Visual Arts programmes, taught on the Manawatū campus, joined the suite of programmes offered by the College of Creative Arts. Toioho Ki Āpiti continues to make a significant contribution to the landscape of contemporary Māori art in Aotearoa and internationally.

Fine Art graduates are inventive, creative, dedicated, resilient thinkers and makers. They want to change the world through their work, whether through establishing themselves as practicing artists, starting their own businesses, or working with others in connected industries—museums and galleries, education, film and television, libraries and archives, and more.

The School of Music and Creative Media Production
Te Rewa o Puanga

Te Rewa o Puanga School of Music and Creative Media Production was established in 2015 to address the expansion of these multi-billion-dollar industries, and New Zealand’s international reputation for innovation and creativity in music and media production. The college now has a state of the art $15m facility that is the only one of its kind in Australasia, and which includes recording, rehearsal, post-production, ADR and Foley suites; dubbing theatre and fully kitted technology and music software labs; black box studios, animation and games labs; digital video studios, motion and performance capture studios; and electronics workshops with 3D printing.

Our Commercial Music programme is the only degree in New Zealand designed specifically to address the creation, production, promotion and distribution of tomorrow’s music.

It has three majors: Music Practice (contemporary, composition and performance), Music Technology (software development, electronic hardware development, and live and studio engineering) and Music Industry (promotion and marketing copyright, management and distribution etc.)

Our Creative Media Production programme offers five distinct pathways: animation and visual effects, game development, film and television, producing and directing, and creative technologies (mobile and interactive development covering VR, AR and MR).

Students can also choose electives from across the college to enhance their specialisation.

Both degrees are taught by experienced academics, technical staff and visiting artists, producers and entrepreneurs. The programmes focuses on connecting students with emerging technologies and creative practice relevant to social, economic and cultural enterprise.
